A Robot is a machine that executes a series of actions automatically. Not all robots look like a human. Such robots are called humanoid robots. There are other types of robots which we will take up some other time.

The main question that is answered in this article is how do we start getting into the field of robotics. The functioning of robot involves a collaboration of different fields.

Fields involved in robotics.

Fields involved in robotics.

The skills required for a robot to function can be classified into the following:

  1. Core Skills
  2. Sense
  3. Brain
  4. Body

Core Skills

Every individual working in the field needs to have some core skills to perform the best in the field of robotics.

Mathematics – A good grasp of geometry and algebra are essential skills for all aspects of robotics.

Physics – Physics is another area  where you need to have good grasp in, especially in electronics, electrical, materials and general physics related to motion and energy.

Sense

The sensory parts of the robot could consist of components like: light sensors, cameras, heat detectors, weight sensors or any other component that could provide digital data inputs. You need to have a good knowledge in electronics, embedded systems, control theory and electrical engineering. People working in this area usually come from Electronics and Electrical Engineering streams like B.Tech/M.Tech in Electronics or Electrical Engineering.

Brain

The brain should be capable of taking decision and processing critical information on behalf of the other components. You need to have good knowledge in software design, programming, embedded systems, computer hardware, artificial intelligence. People working in this area usually come from Software Engineering stream like B.Tech/M.Tech in Computer Science.

Body

This area focuses on the physical aspects of the robot. You need to have good knowledge in mechanical engineering, material designing, manufacturing, etc. People working in this area usually comes from Mechanical Engineering and Product Designing streams like B.Tech/M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design courses.

Apart from these skills you will also need to have to be an avid learner, shows interest in other streams and have a lot of patience.

Starting in the field of Robotics

Now to answer the main question; How to start in the field of Robotics. There is no single course that would introduce you to robotics.

  1. First and foremost, you should have good grasp in mathematics and physics.
  2. Choose your favourite stream: Sense, Brain or Body.
  3. Do your undergraduate / graduate courses in the stream you have chosen.
  4. Keep learning
  5. Play with tools like Raspberry Pi, Drones, etc
  6. Participate in Robotics Competitions
